The X-Files season 12 not happening, at least for the time being

While it may not be correct to label it officially canceled, it doesn’t look like The X-Files season 12 is going to be coming to Fox at any point in the near future.

Speaking to reporters in a conference call early Monday, Fox’s CEO Gary Newman confirmed that the science-fiction series is not going to be coming back anytime soon. There aren’t any plans at present for more episodes, which is largely for a pair of different reasons. First and foremost, you have the noteworthy exit of Gillian Anderson, who wants to move on and do some other things after taking on the revival for two seasons. Beyond just that, though, the ratings for season 11 were not altogether great in the first place.

Do we firmly believe that The X-Files would have continued without Anderson in the event that the numbers were higher? Absolutely, if for no other reason than that Fox loves money and of course they are going to be interested in making as much of it as they possibly can. In this particular case, though, the X-Files season 11 ratings were such that there wasn’t all that great of an incentive for them to bring the show back. Without Gillian, the numbers almost certainly would have slipped even more.

Maybe if Anderson does opt to return as Scully at some point in the future, things could change when it comes to the series’ future. For now, though, Fox is moving forward and they still do have some other revivals that they are casually circling. Just remember here that 24 is still in the pipeline (albeit in a slightly different form) and there is another iteration of Prison Break that is currently in development. We don’t think that this is a network that will ever completely move away from revivals.
