Why the wait for a Gotham season 5 renewal / cancellation?
For one reason or another, the Ben McKenzie series is still on the bubble even after just about every other show was either picked up or canceled. Timeless, Champions, and Code Black are some of the other remaining stragglers, but Gotham is the last notable one on Fox.
If you’ve been reading CarterMatt over the past few weeks, you may know some of our stance when it comes to the show’s future. We’ve always had some optimism and some comments from Fox executives affirm that. We do think that the network loves the show, but there are complications here including A) Fox doesn’t actually own the show (that goes to Warner Bros. TV) and B) with Thursday Night Football coming to Fox this fall, there are fewer hours available on the network than in the past.
Given the limited amount of real estate this coming season, we wouldn’t be shocked if Gotham does come back, but with a smaller order than in the past. We could foresee anything within the range of 10-18 episodes. Would we love a full 22? Sure, but given the recent ratings and abundance of programming on Fox (even with some of their cancellations), we expect a little bit of a shorter order. We also wouldn’t be shocked if it turns out that season 5 is the final one for the series — this would give Fox the chance to end the series properly and then move on to other things. In the long-term, we do worry about the fact that Fox is potentially going to be bought out by Disney and, due to the relationship there with Marvel, DC shows are eventually going to be extinct.
