Instinct season 2 renewal may be May’s most pleasant surprise

What a strong week it has been for determining the chances of Instinct to come back for another season. At this point last week, we thought the odds were pretty high thanks to the show’s impressive total-viewer figures. However, some of that optimism started to fade a little bit when the series was inexplicably pulled for some of the remainder of May sweeps. That’s something networks rarely do to series that are coming back for more.

Yet, the good news coming out this morning is that there will, in fact, be an Instinct season 2! As someone who sees a great deal of potential in the show coming featuring Alan Cumming and Bojana Novakovic, this gives them an opportunity to explore some of these characters and stories more. One of the challenges that comes with being a midseason series is often that you have to film the entire first season in a vacuum, and with that in mind you don’t know what viewers are responding to. It’s also hard because you don’t often get a ton of promotion — Instinct in particular had very little, and we still think that the title is too nondescript and a little bit blase since there is very little chance that you are going to see that and automatically know precisely what the series actually is.

It’s still too early to determine as to when the second season of Instinct will air but if we were to guess, it feels fair to assume that the show is going to be back at midseason. Given that CBS hasn’t given the show too much promotion as of yet, it’s hard to suddenly imagine that they are going to suddenly rush out and give the series a heck of a lot of promotion now.
