Scorpion canceled at CBS; season 5 (unfortunately) not happening
Alas, it seems as though the end is here for Scorpion after four years on the air. This morning, the network officially canceled the series. Robert Patrick confirmed the news further in a post on his Twitter.
Scorpion got off to a really great start back in its first season, but for one reason or another over the years saw a massive slippage in some of its live+same-day ratings. Much of that had to do with the fact that the series struggled following CBS’ comedy lineup, and it also didn’t help that it was a family show airing at 10:00 p.m. Eastern after most families were already getting ready to go to bed.
We would probably be a little more content with the cancellation were it not for the circumstances that surround its end now — season 4 ended on a massive cliffhanger in which Walter and Paige broke up and Team Scorpion was divided into two different teams, with Walter, Cabe, and Florence leading one while the remainder of the former team was on the other. We don’t get a chance to see this play out now or the eventual rejoining that would have probably happened at some point down the road.
As for whether or not this is a series that could be revived elsewhere, we’re not altogether hopeful. For starters, CBS had the studio connections and the incentive to keep it around. Beyond just that, the format worked way better for a network like CBS than a streaming service like Netflix, which doesn’t really need to rely anywhere near as heavily on procedurals or stories where there is a different episode every week.
This cancellation stings mostly because we’ve enjoyed writing and talking about Scorpion over the years; also, we related to these characters probably more than the majority of other crime TV leads out there.
