Criminal Minds season 14 renewal official over at CBS
While we know that the network kept us waiting on this for a rather long time, it’s hard to call this pickup even remotely a surprise. Even with live ratings being down versus some past years, Criminal Minds aired in a more challenging timeslot this year alongside a smaller lead-in. Even with that, it still was fairly competitive with Chicago PD and outperformed Designated Survivor for the entirety of the season.
Criminal Minds, at this point, should be a considered a classic for CBS and the sort of show that deserves a proper final season / series finale whenever it does conclude. We would hope that there would be at least a season 15, if for no other reason than that that’s a really nice milestone number in order to end the entire series on. The cast and crew deserve some more opportunities to shine, and we appreciate some of the movement by showrunner Erica Messer lately to expand the stories slightly beyond just the UnSub of the week. We had that earlier this season with Linda Barnes, and then also the season before that with Spencer Reid.
There’s no confirmation as of yet as to if Criminal Minds is going to remain in its timeslot for the upcoming season, but we will let you know a little bit more in the way of this over the next several days once upfronts officially arrive. We’re hoping that it retains its current timeslot and runs for another 22 episodes. We also did like the fact that there was a pretty consistent run of episodes throughout the winter and spring; even though its season ended a little bit earlier, it was nice to not have anywhere near as many breaks along the way.
