Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 coming to NBC after Fox cancellation
Just when it seemed that Brooklyn Nine-Nine was officially dead in the water with Hulu passing, the right savior for it all along has come forward in NBC.
In a post on Twitter, show executive producer Dan Goor confirmed that the network has picked up the Andy Samberg comedy — while it is just for one season right now, we’ll wait to see precisely what happens from here. Why does this make sense? We suggested them as a suitor days ago just because there was so much obvious synergy there. With NBCUniversal’s studio already working behind the scenes on this show, there were some financial incentives for the network to keep it going. Beyond just that, Samberg is a beloved entity at the network because of Saturday Night Live, and Goor and fellow executive producer Michael Schur are known commodities because of Parks and Recreation. (Schur is also a showrunner on The Good Place.)
What we consider this a reminder of is that while NBC is far from perfect with their cancellation record, they do tend to take pretty good care of their comedies. Look at the time and space they gave 30 Rock, The Office, and the aforementioned Parks and Recreations. It’s not entirely clear just where Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 6 is going to fall into their schedule; we have a hard time thinking it will be back in the fall, but never say never.
As for what this means in regards to the future of other canceled shows, we do think that this further suggests that there is an incentive for The CW to pick up another canceled show in Lucifer — one that Warner Bros. TV (who co-owns The CW) produces. We’ve already went into why we think that this move would work, and hopefully, we’ll have more to say in the weeks to come.
