Outlander season 4 premiere date hopes — with November in mind

Outlander

We’ve previously discussed Outlander season 4 premiere date hopes here at CarterMatt, but in doing so in the past, there has always been one key assumption that we’ve made — that the series would be coming back in September.

Well, expectations have now changed. With Starz confirming that the series is now coming back in November, that opens up a few different possibilities for when the show could start … and also what is the best time for it to happen. The first date that we should rule out here is Sunday, November 25 — the Sunday after Thanksgiving is never a good day ratings-wise to kick off a season, given that there are always going to be a lot of people traveling on that day. Also, plenty of viewers’ sleep schedules are going to be thrown off after getting up at 4:00 a.m. most of the weekend in order to fight each other for a discount 4K TV.

Meanwhile, Sunday, November 11 may not be the greatest day ever, simply because it’s Veterans Day here in the United States. Starz may not pay attention so much about holidays in other parts of the world, but we do think having international attention also does matter. Beyond just the holiday, though, this is the date of People’s Choice Awards this year, otherwise known as the show that Outlander dominated in terms of hardware in early 2017 and was completely left out of the air show for some ridiculous reason. (Still haven’t forgotten that.)

With this, we have two other premiere dates in a month that only has four Sundays — November 4 and then November 18. One interesting change this year is that the American Music Awards are no longer airing on a Sunday in November, as they have in the past. That’s one less thing that Starz has to worry about.

Of these two possible dates, our preference leans to November 4 for one simple reason — if the network does want to take a two-week holiday hiatus on December 23 and 30 before restarting Outlander in the new year, they can still get in seven episodes of the season before then. That way, it feels like things are being split pretty evenly. If you are premiering come November 18, you’re only going to get in five episodes before November 23 and that’s not really a lot to get viewers hooked in.

(Obviously, these are all just our opinions, but they’re based on some general TV and scheduling knowledge.)
