Blue Bloods season 8 finale review: What happened with Jamie and Eddie?
In the closing minutes tonight we not only saw Jamie and Eddie finally get together, but … they’re engaged! Apparently, all it took for Jamie to make a move here was for him to undergo a near-death experience. Eddie saved his life in the midst of a chaotic scene near the end of the episode and in the aftermath of that, you could almost see Jamie completely strip away any of his bluster or fear. We didn’t see the confession — heck, we didn’t even see the proposal — but it all makes sense.
One of the things that you really have to think about the most with Blue Bloods is that the show has its own doctrine and way of doing things. It’s not going to give you a lot of overly-romantic scenes. Instead, it’s a show of symbols, and for Jamie and Eddie there was no bigger symbol than having the two of them arrive at family dinner together. Jamie, almost like he was doing a magic trick, surprised everyone by bringing her out and then after that, Eddie introduced herself as his future wife.
Why the engagement rather than an outright relationship? Apparently, this is based on police code that there’s no real rule prohibiting a married couple from working together at the same precinct. Nobody has to transfer! (Sidebar: Why is Frank bringing this up thirty seconds after learning his son is engaged? Can’t the guy just have a moment?)
The relationship between these two characters now has a chance to venture forward in some big and exciting ways — personally, we loved this ending even if it did distract somewhat from most of the episode as almost the entire team worked in order to figure out who was staging a series of attacks following a release of many wrongfully convicted criminals. What Danny proved through this case is that he will travel for the sake of getting justice.
CarterMatt Verdict
It’s fair to say that the Blue Bloods season 8 finale was everything #TeamJamko fans could want and then some. We got a big engagement and, to go along with that, we’ve got a good sense of some crazy things that could be coming over the course of season 9. By and large, we anticipate that being a very different season based solely on the way in which this finale ended alone.
