Designated Survivor canceled at ABC; no season 3 for Kiefer Sutherland series

Designated Survivor season 2 episode 2

Designated Survivor is going to have to end President Kirkman’s administration sooner than it probably planned — the show is being canceled after two seasons.

While it seemed for a little while as though the ABC series had an good chance at a renewal, largely because of Kiefer Sutherland’s star power and the international popularity that he had because of 24, it just didn’t come to pass. The network officially canceled the series because its ratings in America are just not good enough and they haven’t been for a while. It’s a costly show because of the large cast, and when you add in the ratings then it really felt inevitable that this was going to be happening.

The reason that this is such a shame is that this is a show that may have plotted out its finale in hopes of there being a season 3, so with that in mind, there is a reasonably good chance that there is going to be some sort of big, devastating cliffhanger on the other side of all of this.

Unfortunately, we just don’t see a path for the show to be revived on another platform at the moment. Typically you need either an enormous social campaign or viable numbers to make this sort of thing happen and for the time being, we haven’t seen that with this show. The networks out there that would take on Designated Survivor probably won’t see it as a fit. Alas, with that the upcoming finale is the end of the road.
