The Big Bang Theory deleted scene: Stephen Hawking’s gift for Sheldon, Amy

Stephen Hawking

The Big Bang Theory finale aired on CBS Thursday night, but because of it only running for thirty minutes (including commercials), there was a LOT that was ultimately left on the cutting-room floor. That includes the deleted scene that CarterMatt has for you below, which was a beautiful tribute to the late Stephen Hawking and is such a shame that there wasn’t time for it in the show.

In this video, Amy and Sheldon are delivered a gift from the late physicist, which he must have sent for them prior to his death. Within the package is a watch with a special engraving dedicated to the two of them. While we obviously did not know Hawking, this feels very much like something that he would have wanted. It’s a really sweet moment, and it also does have a little bit of trademark Hawking humor thrown in there. The man may have been thought of as a brilliant mind (which he was), but he also loved comedy and this is another reminder of that. This is ultimately why he made so many appearances on The Big Bang Theory over the years and was established as a friend to Jim Parsons’ character of Sheldon Cooper.

We wondered how the series was going to address Hawking’s death and this is one of the best ways in which they could possibly do so. The only reason why we didn’t get to see it in the episode is because there were so many different boxes that needed to be checked — you had to fit in there Amy and Sheldon’s wedding, their vows, their families and of course the long line of guest stars. You had Kathy Bates and Teller as Amy’s parents, you had a chance to see Sheldon’s sister for the first time in years and his brother after meeting him on Young Sheldon, and then there was of course getting Mark Hamill on board in order to be the officiant for said ceremony (after Wil Wheaton got bumped). There was a lot to include, but kudos to the Big Bang Theory writers for finding a worthy way to tell this story that felt nostalgic and well-pitched to the entire history of the show.
