Big Brother Canada 7 renewal, theme hopes / speculation
For starters, consider the ratings for this season — they were good. Sometimes when fans rally to save a show, what we see happen is a slight uptick in the ratings before things start to gradually fall apart. That didn’t really happen this season — for most of the year the numbers were better than season 5, and that is saying something given the fact that the show didn’t have returning players helping to anchor it. We’re reasonably confident that there will be a renewal — we’ve certainly heard plenty of rumors floating around the internet, but it feels a little too soon to comment on whether or not any of those really amount to anything.
With that in mind, let’s pivot the conversation towards something else instead: What should be done with Big Brother Canada instead thematically? First and foremost, we do think that all-new players is the way to go. We certainly think that there are plenty of people out there who do still have an interest in playing the game; beyond just that, this is still the likeliest way to get a game that feels pure. Returning players often enter with alliances, friendships, and everything else involved.
As for the twists, we don’t really think there needs to be anything all that dramatic that happens — maybe one or two big swings a season and a buyback, but that’s it. We would abolish the Triple Eviction forever, as well as something like what happened to Erica where she didn’t really have much of an opportunity to fight for her safety in the game. We’d also find a way to incorporate more strategy and alliance-building onto the air show. The sponsors are important for funding it, but is there a way to better organically incorporate them without it feeling so much like cheesy segments that are hard to take seriously?
