Blindspot season 4 renewal confirmed at NBC
Going into this week, we did think that the renewal status of Blindspot was rather murky for a number of different reasons, starting of course with the ratings themselves. They weren’t great, and given that Blindspot also comes from an outside studio there was even more doubt on the subject of whether or not it would come back for more. NBC doesn’t necessarily have the same amount of investment in it that they would have in a show that was produced internally and they had some sort of larger financial incentive in.
So why give Blindspot the season 4 renewal? The answer here is threefold.
1. It airing on Friday nights – Blindspot didn’t carry over all of its viewers to Friday but at the same time, we don’t think that anyone expected that it would.
2. Syndication – At 88 episodes Blindspot can be sold off-network elsewhere and that, of course, is extremely lucrative. Because NBC doesn’t fully own the show it won’t make as much money out of it as they would syndicating a Chicago PD or something similar, but we do like to think that it matters.
3. DVR ratings – Sure, Blindspot may not be killing it in terms of some of its live+same-day viewership, but it is continuing to do incredibly well in some of the viewership after the fact. This is obviously very much important since it shows that there is still an audience watching the show. Obviously it would be great to have more of those viewers watching live, but sometimes these matters are just ultimately out of your control.
