Amazon takes Jeffrey Tambor out of Emmy consideration for Transparent
According to GoldDerby, Amazon Studios has withdrawn Tambor’s name from consideration in the category of Actor in a Comedy Series, an award that he has won in the past for the show. This comes in the wake of sexual harassment allegations against the actor, who will not be returning for a fifth and final season of the show. (Tambor will be a part of the upcoming fifth season of Arrested Development, which is premiering later this spring on Netflix.)
Do we think that Tambor had a legitimate chance in order to win an Emmy this year, let alone receive a nomination? We don’t think so, given that he was previously denied one by both the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards. While sometimes it can be hard to gauge intent for awards shows, in this case we certainly do think that the allegations played a large factor in it.
This is one of the few times in which we can remember specifically a network/studio removing someone from consideration, mostly because often they do want to promote their shows to the best of their ability. It’s a little more common to see actors do this for their own work — Candice Bergen previously did so for Murphy Brown, and there was the controversy when Katherine Heigl decided to not submit herself for one season of Grey’s Anatomy. Not too long after that, Heigl ended up leaving the show.
The Emmys take place later this year and will air on NBC. Michael Che and Colin Jost of Saturday Night Live are set to host, and we wouldn’t be surprised that there was some topical commentary over the course of the event.
