NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 episode 21 review: Zoe Morris returns

NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 episode 21

Tonight, NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 episode 21 brought you a story featuring a surprise collaboration. How else can you describe an installment that had the FBI on one side and then the NCIS on the other?

The episode started off with the murder of a Marine via some dangerous nerve gas, which led to Sam and Callen being partnered with FBI agent Zoe Morris (back for the first time since last year) who was opinionated, loud, irreverent … and also working off the books. She didn’t tell the team about her secret operation in advance so when the rest of the team found out about it, that proved troublesome. Eventually she was cleared to take part in the operation, but by that point it was clear that the team wasn’t completely going to trust her anymore — her intentions were pure but they realized that the only way to make this case work was for them to take the lead.

How things unfolded after this actually ended up playing out like a typical episode of the series, one complete with action, drama, and eventually a little bit of justice. The closing minutes of the episode brought you a touching memorial for the deceased. One thing that was interesting about this case was that it was clear Hetty was struggling to be at the ceremony, something that may be a callback to both some of what she’s been through and also some of what she told Keane this past week, a statement that has us questioning her health.

Deeks’ bar dream

This was hyped a lot going into the episode but, in reality, it actually didn’t take up too much of the story. Marty told Kensi about the dream in the early going and, over the course of the episode, he did some location scouting. He did find a bar for himself in the end in the form of a condemned building — it’s not exactly a bar just yet, but it is a spot that Deeks is testing out. He has the crypto-currency money that he could spend on it if he wants to get something going down the road.

At the end of the episode, Kensi made it clear that she was on board with the bar idea, even though he sprung it on her pretty quick. We don’t think that he is leaving the team anytime soon, but this is a contingency plan for the future.

CarterMatt Verdict

NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 episode 21 was fairly fun, a little sad, and also set the stage for Deeks’ future. Also, we have a feeling we will see Zoe Morris again in the future for a third go-around.
