Call the Midwife season 7 finale (PBS): A carousel on a grave

Call the Midwife season 7 finale

The Call the Midwife season 7 finale aired on PBS Sunday night, and it almost doesn’t feel as though we’re doing this episode justice to call it sad. This was a devastating hour, but devastating in a different way from the episode that we saw on the show last week.

Tonight, there was no way in which the show could top the terribleness that we saw last week with the death of Barbara, arguably one of the most shocking moments in the entire series’ run. This is a tragedy that defines the lives of many and over the course of the episode tonight, you saw to a great degree the overall impact Barbara’s death had. She was beloved by everyone at Nonnatus House with Tom of course at the forefront of the list. He loved her and would have done anything for her, but now has to face a future that does not include the two of them together in any way. His future, at least moving through this episode, is unclear.

Still, that final shot of him placing a carousel on her grave has to be one of the most difficult parts of this entire season to watch. That was him both saying goodbye and promising that the two will remain linked forever.

Were there some happier parts to Sunday night’s finale episode overall? Certainly so, with one of the biggest ones being getting a chance to see the entire Nonnatus House staff band together, even in tough times, to celebrate the birthday of Sister Monica Joan. There were a lot of memories and reflections in here, and for those of you who love Trixie it was probably nice to have even just a small cameo of her sprinkled in here. This ending is going to be what sets the stage for everything moving forward in season 8, but the unfortunately part now is having to wait so long for it.

The Call the Midwife season 7 finale is, as a whole, a very good summation of precisely what season 7 is — there were plenty of happy moments but also devastating, heartbreaking ones. Few shows on TV hit you as much as thing one does when it comes to the waterworks. It feels real, even if none of us are midwives working in Nonnatus House in the 1960’s.
