Big Brother Canada 7 renewal: What are the chances?

Big Brother Canada 7 renewal

With the Big Brother Canada live feeds now done for the season, it does feel like now is the perfect time to start speculating on the future. Why wait?

It’s true that we have been critical of the Global series at times this year — the live feeds routinely cut out a lot of the best content and the shows at times are a little too ripe with “previously on” footage and segments that weren’t tied too much to the strategy. Yet, when the dust settles Big Brother Canada is still a very good edition of the franchise with casting that is often superior to the American version. The challenges are also often unique and interesting in ways that we don’t see anywhere else in the world.

Suffice it to say, we would love to see the series back for another go! As for whether or not it actually will return, we do think there’s a cause for at least some hope on that subject despite the last-second renewal for this season.

For starters, consider this: The ratings have performed better for most of this season than they did for season 5. There have been several episodes in general this year that have performed better than the top-rated episode last season, and we think that in bringing the show back, Global showed a commitment to this series that they are going to try and honor from here.

One of the things that has really helped this season, and could help the future of the series in general, is continuing to cast new players from all over Canada. The viewers who are devoted are going to watch regardless of if there are returning players or not. By casting as many newbies as possible, you’re at least gaining new viewers every season in the form of friends / family members. Maybe this only amounts to a few hundred new viewers a season but every little bit helps. We just don’t think there’s as much of a ratings return with returnees as networks often think.

Beyond this this, we also do think the near-cancellation of Big Brother Canada was in some ways a good thing, strange as that may be to say. What it did effectively was woke up the audience to the idea that it could go away.

Beyond the ratings…

A huge chunk of the show is paid for my all of the sponsors, commercials on the live feeds, and segments that air with Hasbro and Wendy’s. These may be frustrating for many viewers but remember that Big Brother Canada gets a small fraction of viewers that the US version does; also, it’s not getting the direct consumer payments that CBS is from the live feeds. It makes money via other ways and that keeps it around. Just remember whenever the houseguests are eating Wendy’s that it is to the benefit of the series as a whole.
