Is World Outlander Day perfect time for season 5 renewal news?

For a long time, we never considered World Outlander Day to be the time in which Starz would announce a season 5 renewal — mostly because we assumed for a long time that it would’ve been renewed by now. As we’ve said, there’s nothing explicit to be concerned about here, but we had hoped that there would be at least one more season ordered by the end of the winter.

Now, we’re just trying to look for specific times in which Starz could want to make a renewal announcement, and none at present feels better than June 1. It was on this day back in 1991 that the first book from Diana Gabaldon was published, and this has become a day to celebrate the world of the books and these characters in as grand a way as possible. What better way to commemorate that day than to share some glorious news about a season 5?

While it’s certainly possible that there could be renewal news before this point, we would just assume that Starz would want to make this announcement at this point on some sort of grand platform — and there is not going to be another grand platform coming up in the near future. We know that there are many people out there who would appreciate this news just as much as a full trailer, and admittedly it’s a little too early for them to release a full season 4 trailer. (We wouldn’t expect that until later in June or in July.)

As for evidence that this could be something that Starz is planning, the biggest thing we can say is that there have been discussions happening about a renewal for a season 5 (and possibly season 6) for months on end at this point. It’s not something that is creeping up on the network and while they could announce a renewal at any point, it does behoove them to find the right timing for it. In terms of publicity, for example, it’d probably benefit them to wait until the other side of upfronts and May sweeps. There aren’t too many TV headlines in early June so they may be able to dominate the news cycle a little more at that point.

Time will tell if this is the perfect venue for a renewal, but it is certainly something to keep in mind for the time being.
