Hawaii Five-0 season 8 episode 23 review: Saving Junior’s friend
The cases that we saw tonight were both exciting and personal, with the one about Junior in particular giving us a chance to see another side of them. To go along with it, that includes a great performance from Beulah Koale as the character did what he could to both find and help his missing friend Cammy. She went on the run after witnessing a hit by the local mob, which in turn was at the center of the story for McGarrett and much of the rest of the task force.
Mob stories are a challenge to pull off in a single episode, mostly because you have to show the hierarchy and the relationships between various mob members in a short period of time. That’s not easy. Luckily, we did get a sense of some of the major players throughout this episode, and in the midst of the investigation you had a good amount of Steve – Danny sniping — basically the sort of thing that we always love about this show, coupled with a good action sequence near the end in the middle of the night. There was some gunfire and it got emotional, but at the end of the episode everyone ended up being okay.
After the shootout, the next order of business came in trying to shut down the mob once and for all — which the team was able to do more in an interrogation room than out on the street.
As the episode concluded, we saw what was a ceremony of peace and respect for Cammy’s deceased mother with Junior firmly at her side. Their relationship is one that we didn’t know too much about going into tonight but it’s certainly one we wouldn’t mind seeing more of. There was a quiet strength about Junior in this final scene, and that’s a sign as to what he means to both his friends and also the Five-0 Task Force as a whole.
We’re thinking about you, Hawaii
There are some pretty serious things happening in the state right now with both the recent eruption and also the earthquake. Be sure to send some love to everyone out there who is currently struggling.
CarterMatt Verdict
We’ll be honest that mob stories aren’t always our favorite — yet, Hawaii Five-0 defied that with another entertaining episode that was emotional and certainly pretty darn dark at times. Our only request? That we had found a way to revisit Eddie and the vet before the end.
