Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 22 review: How is Arizona leaving?
Beyond just that, though, this episode also seemingly addressed what is the beginning of Arizona’s exit from the show. Things were getting difficult for her and Sofia in Seattle, mostly in that her daughter was starting to act out and even violate the law in an effort to get herself back to New York. Arizona was forced to come to terms with the fact that her daughter loves her, but also loves being in New York City. Since she loves Sofia, she also wants to find a way to be close to her. Arizona is now concerning a move to New Work in order to have the entire family at least around each other; it is a way she can have a life where she actually gets to see her daughter without her daughter being sad to be back around her in turn.
This episode also gave Capshaw some moving material in the form of her helping another patient while also recognizing something that we often do not get to see much conversation about on the show anymore: Her amputation and the decision that Callie had to make in order to save her. It was the biggest test in their entire relationship and while it may have hurt them in some ways, at the same time it saved Arizona. It’s hard to imagine her being here today without that call being made.
As for what else we had a chance to see over the course of this episode, the other super-notable story was us getting a chance to see Alex spend some time with his mother in the Midwest. What he had to understand as the episode went along was that it was okay if he wasn’t the person who saved his mother from some of her demons; what mattered is that she found a way to get better, start her own routine, and actually get her old job back. He invited her to his wedding but it’s hard to have a ton of confidence she’ll attend. That may not be best for her and Alex does understand that.
One other notable moment relates to Meredith Grey, who decided that it was the right decision for her to rename the Grey Method the Grey Cerone Method after realizing that Marie was one of Harper Avery’s victims. She may not like Marie in the present or respect some of her recent actions, but at the same time she tried to separate what’s going on in the now from what happened in the past when she did not receive the credit she deserved.
CarterMatt Verdict
Sadness for Arizona is one of the prevailing emotions we feel coming out of Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 22, mostly because we feel like Carina feels. We want her to be happy, but we’re now starting to come further to grips with the fact that she’s going to be happy away from many of us. Consider this the start of the mourning process.
