It’s not too often that you see actors get nominated for two separate Emmys in a single year, and there are often many reasons for that — especially when you think about the amount of time in which it takes for an actor to film a role on a given show. Typically, when you do actors get two Emmy nominations in a year it’s because they had a series-regular gig and then maybe a guest spot for an episode or two on another show.
With Tobias Menzies moving forward into campaign this spring, we’re in a little bit of a different position. He excelled in the first handful of Outlander season 3 episodes as Frank and Black Jack Randall, two very different characters who have contributed mightily to the story of Claire and Jamie Fraser. He was a powerful force and also a troubled man struggling to come to grips with the world around them. You can use a similar sort of description for his character on The Terror in James Fitzjames, a man whose inexperience at sea is superseded by his leadership and, eventually, his descent.
Through these roles, Menzies shows the full extent of what he can do — power, vulnerability, suffering, and fear. He’s a strong physical actor but an equally-powerful emotional one. There is a reason why the man’s star is on the rise and why he was cast in The Crown season 3. He’s shown through these roles, Game of Thrones, and others precisely what he can do.
As for what his chances are of a single Emmy nomination, we’d say he’s got a very good chance. The Terror is the show that may get him more attention due to A) the recency of the work and B) the total amount of screen time that he has in the season. It’s probably a longshot that he gets nominations for both, but it is a possibility if Emmy voters take into account how much he brought to Outlander season 3 in the time in which he was present. He may have somewhat of an uphill battle with them, unfortunately, because of it airing many months ago and only appearing in the first stretch of episodes. (If Emmy voters watch some of his scenes with Caitriona Balfe, how can they not want to vote for him?)
