Why Elementary season 6 ratings could rise, and it wouldn’t be a shock
We’re not sure that the following bit of info has really been reported well enough: Elementary has never been a show that really benefited all that much from its timeslot. For the first part of its run, it was put in a timeslot Thursday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern that was somewhat dodgy at best. It never was the recipient of the best lead-ins and while it performed decently, it never managed to hit mega-hit status. Then, it moved over to Sunday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern, a timeslot that arguably is one of the worst in all of network TV. Many viewers go to bed early in hopes of starting the week off right and even for those who don’t, they may have just spent the better part of the weekend spending time with friends and loved ones.
The ratings for Elementary season 5, especially near the end of the season, weren’t exactly great: Think in terms of a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just over 4 million viewers on some nights. The series struggled, but because of DVR ratings and international ratings, it is coming back now for another go.
Moving into the coming days, though, the series is moving to Monday nights and a spot that could be ripe for the taking. There’s no serious threat on that spot, especially with Good Girls ending, and with summer approaching there’s not going to be much competition. It may still be a 10:00 p.m. Eastern timeslot, but there’s less competition here and also a lot of enthusiasm from viewers who have really missed the show.
Are we anticipating huge ratings here for Elementary season 6? Not exactly, but don’t be surprised to see the series average closer to a 0.7 rating in the demo and over 5 million viewers. We feel like there’s this foregone conclusion for many in the ratings business that season 6 is going to be the final one for the series; yet, from our vantage point we’re really not so sure. There is a great market for a series with Elementary’s sort of escapism and the chemistry between Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu remains a tremendous selling point.
