The Originals season 5: Phoebe Tonkin not series regular
In a post on Twitter by Carina Adly MacKenzie, it was confirmed that Tonkin is only listed as a guest star this season, which we certainly consider to be a disappointing development given that we’ve long considered Hayley the female lead of the series. (There’s a reason why we spotlighted Hayley within our Unsung Heroes article series.) While she may not be a Mikaelson by blood her connection to Elijah, Klaus, and other characters within that family is indisputable. The same goes for her being the mother of Hope, an incredibly important person to this story in the final season.
Obviously, the thing that scares us the most about this announcement is that it could imply that something rather devastating is happening to Hayley in the future, something that we don’t want to see. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the character is being killed off, but it could suggest that she is taken or indisposed in a way that we don’t get a chance to see her for a while. We’ve seen this happen in the past with Claire Holt’s Rebekah, and it certainly wouldn’t come as a shock to see that happen here now.
So, if you love Hayley, the only piece of advice we can offer is to enjoy every episode; after all, there is no longer much of a guarantee that you are going to get her in the entirety of the season anymore. It would be great if we did, but at this point, we have to just take whatever is given since the series has already been filmed.
