Emmys 2018: Colin Josh, Michael Che of Saturday Night Live to host

Colin Jost and Michael Che

It’s now official: Colin Jost and Michael Che of Saturday Night Live are going to be brought in to host the 2018 Emmys. The two have spent the past few years as co-anchors of Weekend Update for the late-night sketch show, and to go along with that also serve as co-head writers on the program as a whole.

This is both a big get and a big challenge for the two comedians, given that they have to figure out a way to switch out the format for something that is a little bit looser than the heavily-structured Weekend Update. Presumably the two are not going to be situated behind a desk here and won’t just be discussing at length current events. What we’re the most concerned about is that the vast majority of duo acts that we see for this sort of awards show rarely work out to be anywhere near as entertaining as we would hope for them to be in advance. Usually they are awkward due to awkward chemistry problems; we know that the chemistry part of this is addressed thanks to Michael and Colin’s extensive period of time working together. As for everything else, we’re just going to have to wait and see.

In a statement confirming the news, here is what NBC Entertainment head Robert Greenblatt had to say:

“NBC is thrilled to be the home of this year’s Emmy Awards and with Colin and Michael in the driver’s seat as hosts, along with surprise appearances by other cast members of Saturday Night Live, I think we are in for one of the funniest awards shows in a long time.”

Meanwhile, Jost and Che added the following:

“We’re proud to be the first duo hosting the Emmys since Jenna Elfman and David Hyde Pierce, and somehow that’s a real fact.”

The Emmys are going to take place this year on September 17. Meanwhile, the nominations will be announced this summer and our personal Emmy preview series is going to be coming along at some point leading up to that.
