When does a Criminal Minds season 14 renewal need to happen?
As of right now, it may feel a little strange that CBS has already renewed many of their other shows and not the long-running drama series starring Paget Brewster and many others. As it turns out though, that is not altogether unusual. It’s a fairly-common practice for CBS to wait on renewing Criminal Minds following their big, bulk renewal, largely because it comes from a separate studio and that means more time is needed in order to properly negotiate to make it happen. It’s true that this is later already than when CBS renewed Criminal Minds for a season 13 back in 2017, but it’s actually not earlier than when some renewals have been issued in the past. For example, the season 12 renewal came in early May, which is very likely when this one is also going to happen. We don’t necessarily see this as one of those super-last-minute orders that CBS makes before the start of upfronts, but it’s something that may come relatively down to the wire since there are so many parts. They need to make sure that the cast is interested in coming back and that what the plans are for most of the remainder of the schedule.
Do we think that we are nearing what could very well be the final season of Criminal Minds at some point in the future? Probably so, just because ratings are down and eventually, the network is going to want to try out some different programs to see where they land. For now though, Criminal Minds is up there with NCIS: New Orleans, SWAT, and Blue Bloods as their best-performing 10:00 p.m. Eastern shows. It routinely performs better than Scorpion and Madam Secretary, and the latter of those has already been renewed.
Once this renewal happens (which we still feel confident that it will), this is when you can start to take on the next order of business in trying to figure out one way or another if someone could actually die on the other side of the finale cliffhanger.
