Criminal Minds season 14: Should Shemar Moore return for premiere?
When you think about where the series is at the moment in the story, it feels as though this makes all the sense in the world. One of the last times in which we saw Garcia going through a hard time, Derek turned back up in order to be a shoulder to lean on. He cares about his “Baby Girl” more than almost anyone else in the world; he wants to be there for her and with that in mind, we like to think that he would turn up if she needs him. While Garcia is absolutely strong enough to recover on her own, a little bit of love never hurt anyone!
Of course, another assumption we are making here (beyond the potential season 14 renewal) is that Garcia survives the life-or-death situation with the Messiah cult in the first place. Both she and Reid were in danger in the closing minutes, cultivating what is the perfect sort of cliffhanger. We know at this point that Criminal Minds is the sort of show that will kill off anyone; yet, these two characters are so beloved that it is hard to imagine the series without them. Given that the writers didn’t kill off two other longtime characters in Morgan and Hotch after their departures, we like to think that they wouldn’t do so here even if Kirsten Vangsness or Matthew Gray Gubler chose to depart.
The one thing potentially keeping this reprisal from happening is pretty darn simple: Moore is the lead over on SWAT, which has already been renewed for another season. In order to make a return appearance happen the Criminal Minds crew would need to find a day in which Shemar wasn’t working on his other show and, beyond that, a day in which there would be availability to film a scene on set. Luckily, both series film in Los Angeles on the same network and that makes things a little bit easier.
