Criminal Minds season 14: Could the cult be a long-term story?
At the moment, though, it doesn’t even seem like Messer knows precisely where things are going right now. Speaking to TV Guide in a postmortem for the most-recent finale, the producer had the following to say about what they are pondering over entering what could be a very important year of the show:
There’s two trains of thought on that right now, as far as the writers go. But there is something sort of natural in that could be an opportunity that you shut down one part of the cult, but there’s another part that’s still going. There’s another part, and holy cow, this is bigger than we thought it was. We’re gonna be in the room deciding that really soon hopefully. I think there’s something pretty cool about the idea of this launches into a season 14. It gives us a drive for the first part of the season, at the very least.
Personally, we do appreciate Criminal Minds the most when there is a larger threat bubbling underneath the surface and the BAU has to do virtually everything within their power to take them out. It gives them a greater challenge than what you see in the standard episode and there’s a great deal of excitement that comes along with that. One of the things that Criminal Minds does struggle with at times, in part just because of the nature of this show, is having a number of villains that get a little bit lost in the shuffle. Keeping the cult from the season 13 finale around, even if it is just for a handful of episodes, gives everyone on the team a greater sense of drive.
