Supergirl, Sanvers fans raise more than $6500 (and counting) to support LGBTQ people in need

Fandom can be a wonderful thing — it can allow you to make new friends, find a community of like-minded people, and even allow you to learn something about yourselves in the process.

What takes fandom to yet another level is when you can find a way in order to properly pay it forward and use your support base for a tremendous cause. That is what fans of SupergirlMaggie Sawyer, and the Sanvers relationship are doing right now by raising money to the True Colors Fund in Maggie’s honor. As of this writing more than $6,500 has been given to the charitable organization (click here to view or donate) and we certainly expect that more will be coming.

The True Colors Fund is an organization designed to help end LGBTQ homelessness by supporting young people and helping them find the support and stability that they need. This is an especially relevant organization to Supergirl given how Maggie (played in the series by Floriana Lima) was kicked out of her own home at an early age because of her sexuality; she was forced to find her own way in the world without the support she so deserved. We like to think that we are living in a world that is more accepting and kind in 2018 but the reality is that this is not always the case. There are many other young Maggie Sawyers out there in the world who need a little bit of support in order to become the people they deserve to be. This what makes these sorts of organizations so essential.

The fundraising campaign has also caught the attention of Lima herself, who posted the message below on her Twitter account.

So while Supergirl continues to air new episodes Monday night on The CW, let’s not forget in the process the tremendous impact that Maggie and Sanvers made on the series’ audience — and the same goes for the positivity some of these fans are showing to help others in need. Hopefully there will be an opportunity to see Maggie again in the future, but there is nothing confirmed on that subject as of now. (Rest assured the moment that something breaks or we hear something definite, CarterMatt readers will be the first to know.)
