Shadowhunters season 3 episode 5 review: Shot through the heart
For now, though, it feels like the top story is simply this: Everyone is royally screwed. Perhaps more so than at any other point this season Lilith flexed some of her true power. For starters, she murdered Ithuriel (apparently, this is how you murder an angel) by ripping out his heart after Clary summoned him to learn more about Jace’s condition. She, in her true form, seemed to do a pretty darn good job of completely stunning Clary into silence. Also, she managed to use her in some ways in order to completely transform Jace to her side in the closing minutes at the bar.
Is Jace now completely under her control? It may be a tad early to say that, but it certainly is not looking good for him right now. Given that he had just informed Alec of his intention to leave, it’s really the worst sort of timing. Now, he could disappear and everyone will just assume that he is somewhere that he actually is not. The rest of the Shadowhunters and Downworlders will be completely clueless as to what is coming up next.
This is not the only manipulation that Lilith executed within this episode — after all, remember in the opening minutes where she did her part in order to put a little manipulation on Magnus.
Magnus and Alec’s struggle
The storyline the two had within this episode was heartbreaking, though it was also wonderfully-acted by Matthew Daddario and Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus’ immortality became a focal point of the story. For Alec, it’s difficult to realize that Magnus keeps a small memento from his past relationships and that he, someday, could just be nothing but a trinket. While Magnus may tell him that this is different, it still does not change the fact that his love is immortal and he is not. This explains so much of Magnus’ struggle to get close; he has suffered so much pain and heartbreak. While it may be wonderful in so many ways in order to see the evolution of the world, it’s also shattering over time to lose so much of the world you love.
Other odds and ends
The good news for Simon is that, at least for now, he seems to have everything worked out with Kyle although the whole spying business was a clear issue. Meanwhile, Izzy and Charlie grew a little bit closer after their night on the town … though we also do think that with a story like this, there is so much still bubbling underneath.
CarterMatt Verdict
Shadowhunters season 3 episode 5 proved to be one of the better episodes of the season, at least in terms of really propelling some stories further while presenting great performances along the way. We’re on the cusp of seeing Clary in even more danger and, beyond that, there was so much rich material for Magnus and Alec. Given that we do think they will get past it, it’s important to see the struggle. This rounds them out all the more as characters.
