Don’t expect Black Lightning season 2 to have Arrowverse crossovers (for now)
With that, of course, comes conversation about the Arrowverse at large. Through season 1 there were references to both Supergirl and also Vixen, characters who are of course well-known through DC Comics’ extended universe. Yet, even with that in mind, that doesn’t mean that the show is looking to actually bring some of these characters into the world itself.
In speaking about this subject via Entertainment Weekly, show executive producer Salim Akil notes that there are no plans on his end to integrate the show into the recent of Arrowverse at the moment:
“We are in our own world … We’re not in the Arrowverse. We’re not in the Supergirl universe. We’re in the Black Lightning universe. If there’s ever a crossover, Supergirl will come to Freeland, or Green Arrow will come to Freeland … We mentioned those other characters just to have fun. I thought it was just fun to tease the fans and have fun with the fans. We’re always trying to have a conversation with the fans and we’re also trying to have fun with them, so that was part of that.”
Is this the right move?
Probably, unless there is some really cool idea to bring everyone together. You don’t want to just force a crossover where there isn’t one; also, the idea of doing a five-part crossover is probably the sort of thing that would make some people’s hair fall right off of their head. Can you imagine how that would even work structurally?
For now, it’s better to have Black Lightning just be Black Lighting and if there is a sensible way to incorporate a character or two into the world, have it be so. Right now, characters from The Flash seem to be the main viable option, mostly because Cisco has the ability to open up Breaches to some of the different worlds. Given that Supergirl and Vixen presumably are in different worlds in the Arrowverse itself it’s still difficult to imagine how these characters could know both.
