Timeless season 2 episode 5 ratings fall; danger grows for show’s future

Timeless season 2 key art

While we had some optimism previously for a Timeless renewal based on some of the earlier ratings this season, there’s starting to be a couple of signal flares telling us otherwise.

Sunday night’s new episode “The Kennedy Curse” — easily one of the most-entertaining of the season in terms of its content — ended up drawing as a whole a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Not only does that mark the lowest rating of the season, but it’s also the lowest rating of the series so far. You can claim that the presence of the Academy of Country Music Awards over on CBS (which did draw a 2.1 rating in the demo) took away some of its viewership, but when you look at the entirety of a TV season there are always going to be excuses. This competition, at least at present, is the current excuse that is out there.

Is hope completely lost for a season 3? Far from it, mostly because it’s hard to say precisely what NBC’s expectations are or the sort of streaming / DVR income they are making from the series. Yet, there is a good reason to have skepticism over the future just because these ratings are not at the threshold we though the series needed to hit — which was around a 0.7 rating week to week. There are devoted fans out there who could make the renewal decision tough but at the same time, NBC may feel like they’ve already done everyone a favor in giving the show another season.

Luckily, there is still plenty of time for the ratings to turn things around if fans are invested and, most importantly, can convince casual viewers or their friends with Nielsen boxes to watch. Let’s be real here — the majority of the diehard fans we communicate with are already watching live week to week and it’s hard for them to do too much more.
