Will Lauren Cohan return for The Walking Dead season 9?

Lauren Cohan

One of the big mysteries regarding The Walking Dead finale on AMC Sunday night actually has very little to do with the episode itself and more to do instead with headlines surrounding it.

To be specific, think in terms of this question: Will Lauren Cohan return? The actress recently signed up to appear in the ABC pilot Whiskey Cavalier and while that hasn’t been officially been picked up yet for a full season, she wouldn’t have signed on to it were she not prepared to depart.

Series executive producer Scott M. Gimple was cagey on Cohan’s future to Deadline other than saying that there are some plans to be announced at some point in the near future. Hopefully, we’re going to get a better sense of some of these plans before long, especially since we don’t want to get out hopes up that Cohan could appear next season only for it to be taken away.

We do realize that in terms of the scheduling alone, there is a reasonably good way for the producers and Cohan to work this out. In theory, we could see Lauren appear in the first few episodes of season 9 before going off and filming the other show — she could feasibly do both, but we know that it would be a challenge and one that could eventually end with Maggie being killed off. We don’t have to tell you that this could be heartbreaking, mostly given that she’s been around the show ever since the days of Hershel’s Farm. Not only that, but she would be dying just a couple of seasons after we lost Steven Yeun as Glenn.

As sad as losing Maggie may be, though, know this: This is a violent, brutal world. There are always going to be characters who die, and it is really just a matter of time before we end up seeing more bodies fall. If Maggie doesn’t depart the series soon, she could anyway in a matter of a season or so.
