Saturday Night Live music: Jack White performs ‘Over and Over and Over,’ ‘Connected by Love’
Tonight, White took to the stage in order to perform one of his latest solo songs in “Over and Over and Over” fronted by a large band and background singers. There is a little part of White that always feels a little bit like nightmare fuel and he certainly kept that going tonight with some of the high notes and also the multiple microphones. He used each one to have a different effect over his voice and most were effective.
Is this the sort of song that we would want to listen to on repeat after the show? Not really, especially since we can barely understand the lyrics to it and the refrain could get a little old after a while. Yet, White is a vintage rockstar in 2018 that plays real music with a real band around him. It’d be a thrill to see this life and just to be washed away in the experience. This is the appeal of him as an artist and we don’t dispute that he is one of the best guitarists alive at present.

Second song – This is another new song from White entitled “Connected by Love,” and in terms of energy it may not have had what “Over and Over and Over” did. Yet, at the same time we enjoyed it more just because we got a good sense as to what the song was about lyrically. This was more stripped-down Jack White, the music that we’ve come to know from him and love. It had the feel of a classic rock ballad from the early 1990’s, something you could just put on the radio and sing at the top of your lungs.
