Saturday Night Live preview: John Mulaney, Jack White expectations

Dave Chappelle

This weekend’s Saturday Night Live is going to feature John Mulaney as the host and just on the basis of that alone, this is a risk. There have been several up-and-coming stars who have hosted this season but perhaps more than any of them, Mulaney is probably not a household name to the casual SNL viewers.

With John, we’re talking here about a former writer who is brilliant at what he does, but has never quite broken through. He had his short-lived Fox comedy Mulaney and some stand-up specials, but we still have a feeling that there are going to be a lot of viewers out there this weekend who really haven’t heard that much about him.

Here’s what we will say to that: Mulaney is very funny and worthy of the attention. He’s a sharp writer and his experience behind the scenes for the series should really aid him here. Also, he appeared alongside Bill Hader recently on his Weekend Update bit as Stefon so it’s not like he is completely unfamiliar to being out in front of the camera here. What we’re especially curious about here is whether or not there have been some ideas he’s had over the years that were never used and with that, he will take advantage of this weekend’s show to pull them off.

Beyond just that, we’d be shocked if there are too many cameos this week, just because we just had Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump last week and with Hader recently on, it’s hard to imagine that he is going to surface yet again so soon.

As for Jack White, you’ve probably heard enough of his music over time to know that he’ll be great. The one thing that we’ll say is that the shortened SNL format doesn’t necessarily behoove his personal style. He’s better with more time in order to really dive in and rock out to some of his music.
