Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Who did ICE target in the hospital?

Jeanine Mason

Is Jeanine Mason leaving Grey’s Anatomy and the character of Sam Bello behind? In the early moments of this episode, it was fair to wonder that.

In the early going tonight, an ICE agent arrived at the hospital in hopes of speaking with a surgical intern — while there were many possible candidates as to who it could be, in the end the person in danger was none other than Mason’s Sam Bello. The surgical intern was one of the best in her field; yet, she was a part of DACA and arrived in America as a baby. Her family was from El Salvador, but that was a place that she never actually identified as home.

If there is some good news when it comes to Sam’s ability to stick around at the hospital, it has to deal with the simple fact that she is surrounded by supportive doctors who value some of her skill. Not only that, but some of these said doctors were known for breaking a few rules. They had the capacity to help her.

Ultimately, the end of the episode was a reminder that sometimes, plans don’t quite work out as expected. We saw in the closing minutes Sam end up departing for Switzerland in order to train under Cristina Yang. Meredith helped to orchestrate all of this, but with that in mind it doesn’t look as though we’re going to be seeing more of Sam in the near future. Especially after this stunt to leave the country, it’s hard to really imagine her being able to come back to Seattle anytime soon. Unless the DACA situation is fully resolved, she’s going to be spending the majority of her career in Switzerland — it is nice to see that the character has a new home, but also heartbreaking in its own way that she had to leave in the first place. This really speaks to some of the pain that many out there are feeling in society because of some of the current rules.

Admittedly, we’ve been worried about the future of Mason for a little while on Grey’s Anatomy, really ever since she was tapped to star in The CW’s reboot of Roswell. If that series does not go past the pilot stage, it is possible that she could return.
