Shadowhunters season 3 episode 4 review: Magnus’ surprise guest
The main event of tonight’s installment unfolded pretty close to the end of the hour, and that is where “Jace” came into the Institute and was able to seemingly eliminate their demonic captive. However, that didn’t turn out to be entirely the case. She was eventually revived, but didn’t have any of the memories as to who she was or precisely what it was that she was doing.
Jace is starting to become suspicious of his alter ego, but Clary did her part to reassure him that this couldn’t possibly be the case. That changed near the end of the episode when he woke up in a different place and didn’t quite know how he got there. He knows something is off, but at the same time doesn’t know exactly what it is.
Meanwhile, for Raphael this was one of his biggest episodes of the season after it was revealed that he was doing whatever experiments he could in order to be a daylighter. While we don’t necessarily sympathize with his plight, at the same time we understand the motive. It has to be very painful to have to go through several decades without being able to see the sunrise.
When Izzy confronted Raphael about his recent criminal acts, she presented him with a choice: Either leave the city or face being reported to the Clave.
Here’s your big cliffhanger…
Magnus Bane (who had a relatively quiet episode save for a nice moment with Alec) found himself the recipient of a rather shocking visitor in the form of Lilith, who showed up at his door pretending to be a normal woman in need of his help. He listened to some of what she had to say and, unfortunately, that’s really all we have at the moment on the subject.
The other cliffhanger pertains more towards Simon, who is clearly being watched in the aftermath of his special powers coming out. It’s a rough time for the poor guy, who is struggling to find a home after what happened with the werewolves. To make matters worse, he’s very much afraid of finding a home in fear that some of these powers will manifest themselves again and there’s nothing that he is going to be able to do in order to repress them.
CarterMatt Verdict
We consider Shadowhunters season 3 episode 4 a piece of a much larger puzzle. While it was compelling, we don’t think that there were any big moments that are going to stand out from it once we get to the end of the season … save of course some really good relationship stuff.
