Saturday Night Live music: Cardi B performs ‘Bartier Cardi,’ ‘Be Careful’

Cardi B was the musical guest going into this week’s new episode of Saturday Night Live and in all honesty, we’re not altogether familiar with some of her musical stylings. We’re actually a little bit more familiar with her work thanks to a recent Super Bowl commercial (which was completely hilarious) and various headlines that we’ve seen over the past several months.

What we know about her is that she had a ton of energy and a big personality; if nothing else, that suggests that we were going to be in for a lot of fun with these performances!

The first track that Cardi performed was really a mash-up of sorts, but the most prominent performance was “Bartier Cardi,” a number that was as high-energy as you would have expected. Her swagger was clear, as was what she was bringing to the audience in terms of personality. If there was one big problem here, it was that there really wasn’t enough sound for her rapping. She was really soft compared to the backing track and we didn’t get to hear her nearly as well as we would’ve liked. That was a shame since her personality was so big and you could see how into the music she was.

Whatever sort of sound issues that were there for the first song that started to clear up a little bit when we got around to the second performance of the night, one entitled “Be Careful.” This was an opportunity to hear something a little more melodic, and also with a very different staging and lighting with it. We suppose from a news perspective Cardi confirming her pregnancy is going to be one of the big headlines that comes out of the night. Beyond all of that, though, we just thought that this was a really good performance and far more fascinating to watch than the first. (We also thought that the pregnancy reveal wasn’t going to happen because of camera angles at the start of the performance that looked designed to hide it.)
