American Gods season 2 production begins; see new photo
In a new post on Twitter, series star Ricky Whittle confirmed the news with a photo of himself alongside the bulk of the rest of the cast. This production has been a long time coming and there have been some changes along the way. For example, there is a new showrunner behind the scenes and it’s still not altogether clear how many of the characters from the first season you are going to be seeing again. Gillian Anderson has already made it clear that she will not return, which leads in turn to the Starz series casting a different character in New Media to try and take that place in the cast. (There’s no real replacement for Gillian, so that’s just as good as it gets.)
Meanwhile, it’s still not clear if Kristin Chenoweth is going to be back after playing such a memorable role at the end of the first season — we do think that American Gods is loosely based on the Neil Gaiman work to the extent that the series does have a little bit of flexibility, and they don’t necessarily have to just go out and create the exact same content note for note that is in the source material. That in turn offers up the series a chance to play around with characters and experiment in some ways that they may not be able to otherwise.
Unfortunately, the start of filming doesn’t quite mean that we’re about to start seeing new episodes of American Gods come on the air. It wouldn’t shock us at all, given the lengthy work that needs to be done here in post-production, for the second season to not premiere until way later in 2018. That may be a rather long time to wait, but fingers crossed that it will be worth it in the end.
