Hawaii Five-0 season 8: Alex O’Loughlin on Michelle Borth’s return

Michelle Borth’s return to Hawaii Five-0 is coming a little bit later this month, and we are going to see Catherine Rollins and Steve McGarrett spending a good bit of time together. With that being said, that doesn’t mean necessarily that this time is going to be of a romantic nature. They’ve had that history, but at the same time the two have both clearly moved on. Even though we may not see it all that often, Steve still has a relationship with Lynn. Catherine isn’t exactly around Hawaii all that much these days so even if Steve was single, it’s not so much like there would be an opportunity to rekindle anything.

In speaking on this subject a little bit further in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, series star Alex O’Loughlin had the following to say in regards to the dynamic you can expect from the two:

“I think it’s an important closure episode for those guys … They’re both sussing out how they feel, what happened, why it happened the way it did. There’s a couple of moments that highlight why it’s not necessarily McGarrett’s No. 1 relationship that he’s going to stay with. There are a few little differences that get highlighted, but there’s a lot of similarities as well … There’s so much water under the bridge and so much back and forth, and I feel like that, in real life, with that amount of tumultuous and emotional movement, it’s rare for something to work. It’s often that you push something behind a certain point and you can hurt the friendship aspect of it as well. It feels like there’s a beautiful friendship there.”

At this point, it feels like the focus of Hawaii Five-0 more than establishing any sort of romantic relationship is really on establishing the friendship and mentorship that exists between some of the various members of the task force. It’s possible that there are some out there who do not like this particular interpretation of what the show is, and at the end, that’s okay. What really matters more so than anything else is that the series figures out the right way to tell the stories of the characters who are a permanent part of the series.

If there are changes with Catherine in the future, it could be great depending on what the story is. From this vantage point, everything needs to be story-driven. We recognize that she is a polarizing character to most of the fan base so there are always going to be challenges when it comes to making the entirety of the fan base happy, so we will just be glad to see a good story.
