Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Dynasty, Jane the Virgin, more renewed by The CW
The CW has officially dropped quite a bit of news on Monday, as the network officially decided to renew many of your favorite shows.
Among the ten shows officially coming back now for an additional season are Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, The Flash, Black Lightning, Supernatural, Jane the Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Riverdale, and … Dynasty?
For most of these series, the renewals are far from a surprise given that the DC TV shows have long been golden, Supernatural will go on as long as the cast wants it to, and the one-two punch of both Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend both draw great critical acclaim. (Both shows could be entering their final seasons based on past interviews.)
The big shocker here is Dynasty coming back given that this was a series banished to Friday nights due to low ratings already. It’s averaging only a 0.2 rating on the season and recently drew a woeful 0.1. This may be the only scripted network show we can remember drawing a 0.1 and coming back for an additional season. We’re happy for the fans of the show, so we’re not making these statements on the basis of quality. This decision may stem mostly from two factors.
1. The CW adding Sundays – That’s two more hours of programming, which means in turn two new timeslots to fill. They probably want a pretty steady stable of shows.
2. The multiple ways in which Dynasty makes money – This is a show with a great Netflix deal internationally that is somewhat similar to Riverdale. It may produce enough results with this that ratings in America don’t matter all that much.
3. Studio balance – The CW wants shows from both of its owners in Warner Bros. TV and CBS Television Studios on the air — unfortunately, that’s tricky sometimes given that almost all of the top-rated ones come from Warner Bros. these days.
