Criminal Minds season 13 episode 19 video: Matt Simmons’ desperation
So, what happens to cause him to enter a state of panic in this episode? It really is the sort of thing that would put almost anyone on edge: A hostage situation involving his wife. We haven’t had a chance to see too much of her in between this series and also Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, but it is pretty safe to assume one thing here — Simmons cares about her deeply and obviously doesn’t want to see anything happen to her. The moment that she is put into this situation his protective instincts are going to come into play — which, when you think about it, are both a good and bad thing.
Let’s kick things off here with the simply reason why this is a good thing. You do want someone out in the field in a situation like this that is more than invested in the case. Matt is accomplished and skilled in taking out a wide array of different bad guys and with his wife on the line, he’s more than motivated.
Yet, at the same time we would say that there are some other concerns here — most notably that he could have on blinders for everyone other than his wife. We wouldn’t be surprised if the rest of the BAU tries to bench him, though that feels like a futile task. Simmons is going to find a way to go in there one way or another, so really this is going to be about the best way in which to channel what he’s bringing to the table skill-wise. As long as they make sure that there are others around him, everything should end up being okay in the end.
