Scandal series finale forecast: How should Olivia Pope’s journey end?

In today’s edition of our ongoing CarterMatt Finale Forecast article series, we’re talking about Scandal on ABC — to be specific, precisely how the series could be coming to a close. This isn’t just about creating another cliffhanger this time but instead it’s about coming up with a resolution that is actually going to make sense for the series and its characters. What makes this so interesting is mostly just that this is not something that Scandal has had to figure out in the past. They’ve always been able to push the next big reveal or tease further on down the road. They can’t do that now. Instead it’s time to wrap up the party with a big farewell that everyone can be happy with – it’s a tall order to say the least.

Below, you can see a few things that CarterMatt would like to see tied up before we say goodbye.

Cyrus is done away with – While we don’t often say that many television characters are beyond redemption, but at this point it really does feel like this guy is. There’s no way that he can be trusted with anything — he doesn’t necessarily need to be killed off, but it needs to be certain that he is completely devoid of power.

Resolving Rowan – We do think that Olivia’s father is in a slightly similar position, though in his case we would say that the odds are even higher the character gets killed off. Can you really imagine ending Scandal with this guy somehow still being among the land of the living? It’s rather hard for us to.

Can Olivia and Fitz end up together? – We do understand there being a lot of enthusiasm around this particular idea and for good reason, given that the characters were absolutely loved by many people on the show over the years. It’s possible that they end up together, but we don’t think that it’s necessary. There is so much water under the bridge and with that, we don’t think that a reunion between the two parties is even close to a sure thing.

Give Huck happiness – If there’s anyone who really deserves it at this point, it’s this guy — though to be fair, we’re not entirely sure he would know how to deal with happiness if it was staring at him in the face.

Leave some characters still in the “fixing” game – It feels right knowing that there are some Gladiators still out there after the fact. Plus, it makes it possible that the series could come back and revisit the story down the road if the producers wanted to.
