Ink Master: Angels preview: Meet Clay McKay, Brittany Lively, Jimmy Butcher

Nikki Simpson, Ryan Ashley, and Kelly Doty - Clay McCay

Tuesday night’s Ink Master: Angels episode is going to be heading to Savannah, and while in the Georgia city Clay McKay, Brittany Lively, and Jimmy Butcher are all facing off for a spot in season 11.

What is exciting to CarterMatt about these artists is that they all have a pretty natural motivation for entering this competition, and there’s also some interesting backstory between some of the competitors, as well. Let’s get to spotlighting them.

Clay McKay – He’s the oldest of the three contestants and he’s also someone who cares deeply about great application. He doesn’t seem to be as concerned about new artistic forms so much as just making sure his tattoos read well and feel natural on someone’s skin. He considers himself a pioneer of the Savannah tattoo scene as someone who has really been doing it longer than anyone else.

Brittany Lively – She’s the relative newcomer of the group, but it feels weird to even say that given that she has been working in the industry for nine years. The sneak peek below doesn’t give you too much of her backstory, at least other than the fact that she’s worked really hard to get herself in a position where she can run her own business and have a place within this world. Brittany does a lot of new-school work and makes bright, colorful tattoos.

Jimmy Butcher – Finally, let’s turn to Jimmy, who established himself as a direct competitor to Clay many years ago. Jimmy’s shop is located just a couple doors down from Clay’s in Savannah and the two already had a pretty healthy rivalry. Jimmy’s style is a little more art-focused, at least in that he likes to do things that are interesting and haven’t been done before.

You’ll see these three artists take each other on in a first challenge that is all about making the perfect Georgia peach on the canvas’ skin. Based on what we’re seeing here, Clay feels like the likely winner of this round. Clay’s tattoo is beautiful, it’s simple, and above all else it’s super-clean. He showed here that he knows how to have restraint and make a tattoo that suits the amount of time he has (which is perfect for an Ink Master competition). If Clay does advance it’s ultimately between Jimmy and Brittany as to who moves forward and they both have advantages and disadvantages. Long-term Jimmy’s tattoo may look better since it’s so bold, but at the same time it looks like an apple almost as much as it does a peach. Meanwhile, Brittany’s looks more like a peach but it will likely fade faster due to the lack of black.
