Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Should Scott Speedman return as Nick Mars?

Nick Mars

This past episode of Grey’s Anatomy told a number of engaging stories, and beyond just that it seemed to achieve something that the show rarely does: Introduce a great new character in Dr. Nick Mars. Scott Speedman told the story of this transplant doctor beautifully and established what felt like instant, organic chemistry with Meredith Grey. This didn’t feel like a dramatic romance that was forced down anyone’s throats — there was no hookup and there was no weighty twist designed to throw the two into peril. While Nick was in danger of losing a kidney, it never quite felt like his life was on the line.

Instead, there was something fun and refreshing about watching them communicate. They understood each other, and to go along with that they also understood that there were obstacles that were naturally in the way of them actually pursing something in a serious fashion. Dr. Mars is from Minnesota, for example, so sooner or later he would have to go back there.

Yet, does he have to back there forever? Does he have to go back there at all? It would probably be unrealistic if he was to just show up again next week and dropped his entire life, but it does feel like his return would make for a great ending to this season — or, a twist at the start of season 15 (which is almost certainly coming).

The biggest thing standing in the way of a Nick Mars return, for now, is Speedman’s own schedule. He is a regular over on TNT’s Animal Kingdom — that’s a very good show but he’s in a position here where he can only be full-time on one of the two shows. There are signs that his Animal Kingdom character Baz is in some serious danger, so that could be the bridge that brings him over to the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital full-time. If not that, then he’s probably limited to a few appearances here and there.

As of right now, there are no other confirmed appearances for Speedman on Grey’s Anatomy — but we have a good feeling that this is probably not the end of his journey.
