Is CBS’ Instinct charting already towards season 2 renewal?
Following the Alan Cumming series’ premiere, (an hour in which it drew a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic), we absolutely did have a few different concerns. For example, ratings tend to fall for a series entering its second week on the air and it was understandable to think that something similar was going to transpire here.
Yet, something incredible actually happened with Instinct episode 2 — its ratings rose, and by a pretty significant amount. This episode generated in total a 1.3 rating in the demographic, enough to make us start to feel a little more confident that this show has a chance of actually making it back on the air in the fall. Instinct is a show that it would be great to see CBS renew for a number of different reasons, whether it be from a talent standpoint to the network proving that having a gay male lead can work despite previously having a somewhat-limited framework from a diversity standpoint.
Sunday night’s Instinct episode 3 (preview further over here) is likely going to be the biggest test to date of the series’ overall staying power, given that this episode isn’t necessarily going to have the same sort of ratings bump that the series had previously. While the 1.3 rating for episode 2 was fantastic, it was lifted by airing after a high-rated edition of 60 Minutes featuring an interview with Stormy Daniels. All signs pointed for a while to this episode being one of the biggest 60 Minutes episode in a rather long time.
If Instinct keeps most of its audience for week three, that could be a sign that a season 2 renewal could be right around the corner. If it suffers without the lead-in there’s a good chance there could be some danger.
