Ratings: Did MacGyver, Blindspot, Agents of SHIELD help renewal odds?

Hawaii Five-0 crossover

With our ratings updates the remainder of the spring, one of the things that we’re really going to try to do here is focus on the shows that need that extra bump. For example, it shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone that Hawaii Five-0 won Friday night with a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic, so it’s almost a lock to come back for another season. However, what about Blindspota show struggling to keep its ratings momentum? Does Agents of SHIELD have much of a chance? In this CarterMatt article, we’re going to break some of these numbers down.

MacGyver – Let’s start with the show that we focused in the latest edition of our Renewal Watch series (see below and subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more). The Lucas Till – George Eads show drew a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic for this past episode. It remains down in the ratings versus the other CBS series and that’s a little bit of a bummer; add to this the presence of another show in Magnum PI that seems tailor-made for Friday nights and it’s understandable why there are some fears over the show’s future.

Nonetheless, we’re not overly concerned about MacGyver at present. It still feels like a great solution for this show would be to move it to Monday nights and air it after the comedy lineup. It would be a good fit there and smart counter-programming against a show like The Good Doctor.

Blindspot – Here is where things start to become a little bit more troublesome. The Jaimie Alexander – Sullivan Stapleton series ended up drawing a 0.5 rating for this past episode. That’s not great. With some of these recent ratings NBC is starting to understand that replicating the success of CBS on Friday night is not that easy. This is still very much a tough night for shows that appeal to younger audiences. (Taken, for the record, is pretty much dead and is just airing out the remainder of the season.)

Agents of SHIELD – Meanwhile, the superhero drama also posted a 0.5. So why are we more optimistic about SHEILD than we are Blindspot? The simple answer to that is because it has the Marvel stamp of approval behind it. Blindspot, meanwhile, comes from an outside studio and therefore NBC has a little less of an inherent investment in it.
