The Crown season 3 casts Outlander’s Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip

The fantastic roles continue for Tobias Menzies — today, the Outlander actor was officially announced to be playing Prince Philip in season 3 of The Crown,. and while this is a big role to take on from Matt Smith, we couldn’t think of anyone better to take on the task.

According to a new report from Deadline, Menzies (who is one of our favorite actors working in TV these days) is going to be coming on board the Netflix series, replacing the role played by Smith over the course of the first two seasons. Menzies joins Olivia Colman, who is attached to play the older version of Queen Elizabeth, replacing Claire Foy. Filming for The Crown season 3 is going to kick off a little later this summer, and hopefully at some point after that a premiere date will be confirmed. As of right now, CarterMatt has a hard time envisioning the show coming back until at least early 2019.

Menzies is best known these days for playing Black Jack / Frank Randall on the aforementioned Starz series, but he does have a number of other notable credits including Rome, Game of Thrones, and his current gig on AMC’s The Terror — another excellent show that you really should watch if you get the opportunity to do so. This is a chance for more viewers to discover his talent and we’re all about him finally getting this opportunity. This is one of the most well written shows of its kind out there and we are more than thrilled to see how much of the Royals’ story is told this time around. Menzies has a two-year deal, which means that he is going to be around the series to the end of season 4. At that point, Peter Morgan will go back to the drawing board for casting as the characters will be aged up once again. As of right now, the plan is for The Crown to run for the grand total of six years.
