The Voice contestant Molly Stevens says coach Kelly Clarkson ‘small-minded,’ apologizes

Kelly Clarkson

There is some interesting drama brewing over on NBC’s The Voice, and this is certainly not the sort of thing that you’re used to seeing with this typically-positive show. Following her recent elimination, contestant Molly Stevens (who is openly gay) too to her Instagram to share some thoughts on her experience, and also what she thought was an improper comparison made by her coach in Kelly Clarkson.

In a recently-deleted post on Instagram, here is what Stevens had to say:

“One other thing. @kellyclarkson compared me to @melissa_etheridge and the @indigogirlsmusic. While I’m extremely honored to be in that category of talent I do believe that comment did us all a disservice and only threw us into a labeling trap. It felt small minded to me and exactly what I feel we need to bring attention to the world.”

After this message was passed along by a fan, Kelly also shared some of her thoughts on the subject:

This, in turn, caused Stevens to issue a response and an apology:

Really, a whole lot of this ultimately just speaks to the emotions that can come as a result of being a part of this show. Stevens likely felt hurt after her exit and it probably made sense to look for an explanation within her musical style and her identity. If she felt like she wasn’t properly understood as an artist, it makes sense that she would respond using this particular language. Yet, at the same time we don’t think she really took Kelly’s thoughts into consideration — also, she probably didn’t quite realize the impact that one post on social media would have. This is almost a wake-up call in that regard to how things can spread like wildfire. (Then again, if she wasn’t aware that this could happen why did she @ some of the artists in her original Instagram post?)

It’s sad that this was Stevens’ experience with the show after the fact, but we hope that it doesn’t hamper Kelly’s overall.
