Saturday Night Live: What was the best sketch of March 2018?

Dave Chappelle

Is Saturday Night Live new tonight? We wish that it was and the streak of consecutive new episodes could continue over on NBC.

Unfortunately, we’re not going to be seeing the sketch show for a little while longer — to be specific, think in terms of April 7. We’ve been rather lucky to get some new episodes in March (more than we’re accustomed to) because of the Winter Olympics, but unfortunately we are now on a brief two-week break until the series returns with more episodes.

So while we do wait for the next new episode to air, let’s go ahead and share what we thought was the actual best sketch that we’ve seen over the past month: The brilliant The Bachelor finale could open that featured the show’s original “winner” Becca Kufrin (Cecily Strong) having a very awkward conversation with Robert Mueller (Kate McKinnon), who is basically standing in for Arie Luyendyk Jr. in this case.

Typically, we don’t refer to cold opens as our favorite sketch of the month because they don’t really have staying power. They’re often great in the moment and then irrelevant a few weeks later when the news cycle has moved onto something else. It really takes something brilliant to withstand the test of time and this sketch brings it. This is such a unique, creative way to spoof two different things at the same time and it really worked. It was better than the standard political sketch because it wasn’t a straight-up parody of something that was already in the news. This represented more SNL trying to actual do their own thing, which we definitely do appreciate since so many other sketches of this nature get lost.

The last time we liked a cold open better than probably any other sketch in a month was all the way back at the start of the 2016 season, which is when we met Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump for the first time.
