Outlander season 4 cast, producers talk Stephen Bonnet as villain

We spoke recently that Stephen Bonnet on Outlander season 4 could be the most notorious villain on the series since Black Jack Randall — he’s not the same sort of villain as Randall but he’s nefarious nonetheless. He is cunning, he is wicked, and his actions could fill Jamie and Claire with both pain and regret. Without giving too much away, there is a point in the story where these characters could have in some way put a stop to some of Bonnet’s actions before they really even started.

What makes Bonnet so dangerous is that when you look at him, he has such a natural charisma that you want to root for him. You don’t immediately see some of the darkness underneath and you want to give him a chance. Then, he commits some of the most atrocious acts possible. Sam Heughan describes this perfectly in a new piece over at The Hollywood Reporter:

“It’s hard to top Black Jack but we have with Bonnet. Ed Speleers committed to this. People are going to hate him. He’s so charming, so you kind of like him, but you find out later down the line that he does some really terrible things. He’s a great new villain.

For a little bit more insight on the character, executive producer Matthew B. Roberts added the following:

“Stephen Bonnet is a pure psychopath and a narcissist whose day-to-day is, ‘What’s going to pleasure me?’ … He’s also a chameleon. He can act like anybody and fit into any situation, and that’s what makes him so different. You never know what you’re going to get with him.”

We know that Speleers is capable of so many different layers from some of his past work and he seems on the surface to be the perfect cast for Bonnet. Unfortunately, you still have to wait a while in order to check out precisely what is going to be coming up given that Outlander is not premiering on Starz until the fall. Ed is one of the most-notable new additions to the cast this season, with the others being Maria Doyle Kennedy as Aunt Jocasta and Colin McFarlane as Ulysses.
