Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Ellen Pompeo talks Sarah Drew, Jessica Capshaw’s departure
Above all else, though, we would say that this was a positive discussion in regards to success, how to handle it, and also how to honor those who set the trail beforehand. Pompeo did recently make headlines because of her new pact with ABC that makes her the highest-paid drama actress on TV, and within this interview she speaks to some of the importance of that. At this point there really is no Grey’s Anatomy without Meredith Grey, and she is getting at this point what the market would dictate for a male star in her position or anything else. One of the common gripes we hear about is how much certain actors make for their gigs, but just remember that these are some of the people at the very top of their profession. Think of this in terms of the business world. There are hundreds of thousands of aspiring entrepreneurs who struggle to make a living, but some of the people at the top of their profession are billionaires with all the success in the world. Everything is on a scale, but it just so happens that we hear about the few super-successful actors often and not the ones who make a little more than a living wage.
In this interview Pompeo also talks about one of the more ridiculous headlines over the past few days in the rumors that her pay increase somehow led to Jessica Capshaw and Sarah Drew departing. This has never been true; it’s okay if you want to be angry at the writers/producers for deciding that they wanted to focus in creatively on some other people, but this doesn’t have anything to do with Ellen or what she is making. Think about just how much money this series makes on ABC, in syndication, and via its streaming platforms. There is plenty of money to go around for the cast but there are other issues at play.
